Vilamoura

Vilamoura is located in Loulé county and is one of the most famous holiday and golf resorts in the Algarve. In the center of Vilamoura is the marina, the largest of its kind in the entire Algarve. Numerous hotels, resorts and residential areas are grouped around it.

Vilamoura is located in the municipality (freguesia) of Quarteira, right on the coast. Together with the neighboring resorts of Vale do Lobo and Quinta do Lago, Vilamoura forms the so-called "Golden Triangle" of the Algarve.

The city beach of Vilamoura, in the immediate vicinity of the marina, extends to the fishing port of the neighboring town of Quarteira. The long, sandy beach is wide and flat and offers numerous water sports options.

On the other side of the marina's harbor entrance you can explore two more kilometer-long sandy beaches. The small river Ribeira de Quarteira flows here. From the Buntklippen here you can hike along the beach to Pine Cliffs in Albufeira County.

The region around Vilamoura is a paradise for golfers: there are six golf courses in the resort alone, and seven more in Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo. International tournaments such as the Portugal Open or the Portugal Masters have often been held here.

The ideal starting point for a variety of water sports activities is the Vilamoura marina. Boat trips along the coast to the cliffs and grottos near Albufeira are offered here, as well as dolphin and deep-sea fishing trips.

The market hall at the fishing port of Quarteira is considered one of the best places around to buy freshly caught fish and seafood. On Saturdays, farmers from the surrounding area and the Alentejo offer their regional products - an ideal opportunity to find out more about the country and its people.

A gypsy market takes place every Wednesday at the exit from Quarteira towards Almancil in Fonte Santa near the campsite: traveling traders from all over the Algarve offer their goods, especially textiles and leather goods, at this market.

Due to the high demands of the owners and guests of the holiday resorts in Quinta do Lago, Vale do Lobo and Vilamoura, there are a number of good shops in neighboring Quarteira, including fashion, interior design and regional specialties. Foodies will find an excellent selection of restaurants in and around Vilamoura, offering local specialties as well as international cuisine.
