Carvoeiro is located 6 km south of Lagoa and 12 km east of Portimao, the next larger town with excellent shopping facilities.
A trip to Silves (approx. 15 minutes away by car), the former capital of the Algarve, is highly recommended with its historic castle and interesting market hall.
The first to succumb to its charm were rich Portuguese people from the north who could afford to build their holiday homes here on the western slope of the village bay, which they lived in during the summer months. The casino, the ruins of which still stand today, also dates from this time.
Carvoeiro has now developed into a popular holiday resort. This is certainly primarily due to the fact that, thanks to sensible building planning by the district administration in Lagoa, the place is “free of high-rise buildings”. The holiday complexes, which are located around the actual town center, were built in a way that was adapted to the landscape and can therefore easily be described as a villa resort.
In addition, there are beautiful stretches of the rocky Algarve in the immediate vicinity, such as the "Algar Seco".
The access road to Carvoeiro ends at the main square and town centre. To the left and right, the square is picturesquely framed by the rising rocky coast. In summer, music is played here on a small stage in the evenings and people meet here in the numerous cafés and restaurants.
The only church in the village can be reached from the square. From the forecourt of the church, you can enjoy the wonderful view of the bay and the town itself or of the Atlantic as far as Portimao or Lagos. The sunset in the evening is particularly impressive and spectacular.
