Tavira

Höhle an der Algarve

Tavira, a small elegant and historic town, 20km northeast of Olhao. Tavira has retained its charm almost unchanged over the years. The foundations of the arched bridge date back to Roman times, but the town itself emerged during the Moorish occupation, became one of the largest and most important ports of the 15th century and was granted town charter in 1504.

Since Tavira was also badly damaged in the great earthquake of 1755, most of its buildings date from the 18th century. The Praca da Republicada, the central square, is a popular meeting point; here you can drink coffee in one of the small street cafes with a view of the river and watch the pulsating Lenen. Other sights in the city include the carved heads of the Misercordia Church, the castle and the former mosque built there. There are 27 churches in Tavira, the interior of the Igreja do Carmo is particularly impressive. Don't miss a visit to the eastern part of the city, beyond the old bridge, and the garden on Praca Dr. Watch Antonio Padinha, in which roses twine around a palm tree. Tavira hardly offers any nightlife. The best seafood restaurants can be found on Rua Jose Pires Padinha.
